Khecari New Review (Theater and Comedy)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 18 2011

Jonathan Meyer's expansive new Whence is actually a little too expansive. Performed in a 15,000-square-foot loft, this last in his series of "Home" solos features four singers performing Christopher Preissing's score and a "crowd" of 10 or 12 people whose jobs include directing traffic: they send the audience to stand, usually, at stations around the room. (There's also a map.) Though Meyer is naked for a substantial part of the hour-long piece, he seems oddly distant and inaccessible. In the two earlier solos, he spoke regularly and with humorous self-deprecation. Not here. Meanwhile, the vocalists paper over his silence with wordless clamor. All the bustle and noise make it impossible to focus on Meyer, an engaging but subtle performer. --Laura Molzahn
