Kid Galahad

The archetypal boxing picture, with Edward G. Robinson as the manager who discovers a muscular bellboy (Wayne Morris) and promotes him to the championship. Shady promoter Humphrey Bogart provides the siren call of corruption, and Bette Davis (she appears fleetingly, as if she were walking through on her way to another movie) is Robinson's brassy girl friend. It's pretty much all genre and no nuance, though Michael Curtiz's direction is surprisingly soft and light. With Harry Carey and Jane Bryan (1937).
