Kidd Jordan, Hamid Drake, Ernest Dawkins, Jeb Bishop, Jeff Parker, and Josh Abrams; Tatsu Aoki's Miyumi Project Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., March 21, 7 p.m. 2012

Fred Anderson's nightclub the Velvet Lounge no longer doubles as a monument to his memory: it closed mere months after his passing in June 2010. But the great tenor saxophonist is in line for another honor: Second Ward alderman Bob Fioretti has proposed that a new park in the South Loop be named after him. However Chicago chooses to commemorate Anderson, though, his real legacy will always be the soulful, fearless jazz he played and the influence he had on the generations of musicians who grew up on his bandstand or shared it with him. Both his music and his inspiration will be celebrated tonight, on the day before what would've been his 83rd birthday. Bassist Tatsu Aoki will lead a four-horn version of his Miyumi Project (a group that appeared at the Velvet many times), and Anderson's favorite foil, venerable and fiery New Orleans saxophonist Kidd Jordan, will lead an all-star ensemble that also includes drummer Hamid Drake, saxophonist Ernest Dawkins, trombonist Jeb Bishop, guitarist Jeff Parker, and bassist Josh Abrams; Jordan's band will play Fred's tunes. —Bill Meyer
