Killing End

Hong Kong exploitation auteur Herman Yau turns a lone-cops-versus-mobsters melodrama into a surprisingly affecting character study (2001). Dik (Andy Hui) is a principled cop at odds with fellow officers, many of them on the take from the local gang. Borrowing heavily from Scorsese for a gritty, dead-end feeling, Yau charts Dik's downward spiral as the vicious gangsters go after everyone he cares about—his mentally frail girlfriend, his blind mother, and his morally compromised cop buddy. In Cantonese with subtitles. 79 min.
