This whimsical fluff (1967) from Philippe de Broca would seem harmless enough if so many people didn't insist on taking it as art. Alan Bates is the World War I soldier who wanders into an abandoned French village, which has been taken over by the residents of the local insane asylum. Sweet and simpleminded—and it does take some skill to sustain this sort of thing without going wholly mawkish, for which some limited credit is due. With Genevieve Bujold. 102 min.
