King of the Gypsies

Dino De Laurentiis presents a Godfather carbon (1978), ineffectually directed by Frank Pierson, who was previously known only as a pseudonym for Barbra Streisand (A Star Is Born). Half the film passes while Pierson fumbles with the exposition—setting up an intricate internecine war for control of a Gypsy clan—and then he fumbles the action. Pointless, messy, rambling; no atmosphere and no energy. Sven Nykvist, Bergman's cameraman, is credited with the cinematography, and it seems safe to assume that whatever visual quality the film has belongs to him. With Sterling Hayden, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Judd Hirsch, and Eric Roberts.
