King of the Rubbish Dump

Set in a giant dump where the poor scavenge and trade, Do Minh Tuan's 2002 drama focuses on the macho overlord of the dump, a young woman he rescues from the prostitution she engages in to buy her mother medicine, and the artist who paints her and makes the overlord jealous. In a wonderful subplot the artist collaborates with a blind musician to turn the dump into an art installation. The shots of the dump and its surroundings are impressive if brief, but I would have preferred less predictable melodrama—guess who loses his machismo?—and more economics and sociology. In Vietnamese with subtitles. 97 min.
