Kino-Eye | Chicago Reader

Jean-Luc Godard once remarked that, where Eisenstein “betrayed” the principles of a truly political cinema by retreating into history with Potemkin, only Dziga Vertov realized the true Marxist-Leninist project: with his documentaries, he attempted a consistent political approach to contemporary, concrete situations—the politicization of everyday life. Kino-Eye was intended as the introductory feature in a series of expanded newsreels, though Vertov was unable to produce any more. It remains a remarkable experiment, an earnest, intelligent search for a wholly new film language.
