Lightweight Canadian counterculturalist Ron Mann (Weed, Comic Book Confidential) returns with a characteristically mediocre doc about mushrooms and the people who love them. Time-lapse footage of fungi in bloom is magic, but otherwise this a shapeless heap of cutely animated scientific factoids intercut with blathering hippies and gurus at the annual Telluride Mushroom Festival. Various potentially interesting crank philosophies—including John M. Allegro's notorious proposition that the Gospel writers intended Jesus as a metaphor for hallucinogenic 'shrooms—are alluded to but then discarded. Title notwithstanding, don't expect to come away with improved knowledge of which mushrooms are safe, poisonous, or capable of unlocking the doors of perception. 73 min.
