On the title track from his recent self-released EP, What You Think, the 20-year-old footwork producer and Teklife member known as DJ Taye grabs an irate vocal sample of someone yelling “Fuck,” speeds it up, puts it on repeat, and blends it with what sounds like bubbly lounge music being pumped into a waiting room of a dentist’s office in Japan. This kind of experimentalism is de rigueur in footwork. The hyperfast pace, distorted bass, and competing rhythmic pulses are part of the reason the Chicago sound remains light-years ahead of the bulk of today’s popular electronic music. With What You Think DJ Taye rolls out a populist spin on footwork while maintaining its beguiling futuristic force. On “Reality/Fantasy” Taye chops up vocal samples from Mac Miller’s “Happy Birthday” and spreads the result atop fragile, hovering synths and a minefield of drum patterns. And on “How Did You Know” he smoothes out footwork’s rough edges by anchoring the track with a luxurious soul sample and filling in its edges with hints of light, spraying percussion. —Leor Galil
