Koi Mil Gaya

Consistently entertaining but truly bizarre, this 2003 Bollywood musical takes the Indian infatuation with crowd-pleasing American cinema past the point of absurdity with its blatant pillaging of our most profitable heart-warmers. An amateur space researcher receives a tonal message from another world (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) but then dies in a car accident that also injures his pregnant wife; years later his blissfully brain-damaged son (Forrest Gump) befriends a blue, fishlike creature from another galaxy that's been stranded on earth (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial). Whatever thematic integrity the American originals might have had is gone, and the sugary froth left behind carries an unpleasant aftertaste of commercial calculation. Highly recommended, but only as a form of cultural shock therapy. In Hindi wth subtitles. 171 min.
