La Soiree Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 5 2012

This cabaret/circus imported from London offers the amazement of a Cirque du Soleil performance without the mystical BS. Instead, La Soiree is terrifically witty with its physics-defying acts, like the bloke in a suit pulling out the Financial Times as he balances another dude on his neck. But the oohs come from a very different place from the aahs under this big tent, because it's also a burlesque. One woman performs a hilarious magic act entirely in the buff, while most of the buff dudes strip to their skivvies. Seeing these guys undertake Olympian feats of strength with a wink and a nod is like watching muscle cars, and seeing those feats after their clothes came off is like getting to look under the hood. I got the sense there's just a little more here for gay men (in the Liza-lite thespian bit and the stupendous drag queening) and women (my date continually reassured me that she still thinks I look good, too) but I still couldn't be sorrier that this show closes in just two weeks. —Asher Klein
