Heavy-duty doom merchant J.R. Robinson of Wrekmeister Harmonies replants his penchant for serious drone in a more ethereal sort of garden with the project Lagartha—named for a famous Viking shield maiden. The lovely warble of Janet Bean (Freakwater, Horse’s Ha, Eleventh Dream Day) provides a delicate layer of femininity on “Rats for Anne” (the single, extended track Lagartha has shared), her gossamer cry providing a nice contrast to Robinson’s mix of stoic, Leonard Cohenesque spoken word and Nick Cave-inspired somberness. The lyric, sweet-toned violin of Esther Shaw offers melodic relief and a glissando presence that ties all of the elements together and embroiders the simple guitar patterns and circular drumming. —Peter Margasak
