Land of Plenty The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 21 2014

In the coda to Larry Bao's new play, Cindy and Steve, once engaged and now near strangers, meet for their "last good-bye" in the abandoned restaurant Steve financed and Cindy bankrupted. Through disarmingly simple exchanges, Bao cunningly captures two lifetimes' worth of regret and disappointment. Unfortunately, the preceding 90 minutes showcase such tortured logic the story never coheres. Steve needs Cindy to repay the seed money he loaned her five years ago, yet he also insists she shut down the restaurant so he'll be "free of her." Cindy acts as though loan repayment is nearly unfathomable. She also believes one box of spoiled produce can "contaminate everything." Bao directed this inaugural production from Tiger in the Bush Theatre Company; an outside eye might have served him better. —Justin Hayford
