Ne-Hi aren’t just another upstart band awash in lazy reverb, destined to drift out to sea and drown in their own echoes—they’re too catchy. It’s that simple. The rising local foursome’s self-titled debut, which dropped in March via Manic Static (and Bandcamp), animates its fluttering indie rock with intelligent, sweeping melodies sung by choruses of voices, which split the difference between raw and anthemic. The shimmering guitar work is meticulous but not overwrought, so it’s still fun—in fact, there are good vibes to be had all around. This is a Chicago summer soundtrack if I’ve ever heard one, better suited to sunshine and sno-cones than basements and Old Style. All your friends are right about Ne-Hi—and these kids are just getting started. —Kevin Warwick
