Las Hermanas Padilla Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 1 2012

Only so much emotional energy can be wasted on despair, suggests playwright Tony Meneses in this drama about ten sisters-in-law who unite to combat grief and isolation while their husbands are away at war. Meneses focuses instead on the day-to-day tasks—cooking, cleaning, hoarding, drinking, storytelling—that military spouses fall back on in order to survive. Rooted in magic realism, the play is as much a study of vices as of family. That's a problem for Chicago Fusion Theatre: most of Juan Castañeda's cast haven't the subtlety to convey how curdled longing can cause a crackling, joyful conversation to turn to heartache and fury on a dime. Among the exceptions are Erica Cruz Hernández and Jeanne Arrigo, whose performances balance passion and pain. —Dan Jakes
