English singer-songwriter Laura Marling seems fully mature as an artist at the tender age of 21. Her stunning third album, A Creature I Don't Know (Ribbon Music/Domino), ought to give pause to critics who've insisted on linking her to Britain's "nu-folk" scene—it announces her as a musician capable of such rapid exponential growth that I can't wait to hear what comes next. Her music has grown more complex and ambitious, while the influence of Joni Mitchell has become more obvious—but the way Marling puts her crystal-clear voice to use is all her own, creating a delicious juxtaposition as her jazz-informed phrasing ripples atop strummy arrangements that evoke her homeland's rich folk tradition. —Peter Margasak Alessi's Ark open.
