The opener to the Mantasticks' latest revue sets the bar high, as its six members let it all (well, most of it) hang out in a charmingly disheveled parody of Cirque du Soleil complete with nude bodysuits. But their aim isn't as true in the rest of the show--audience members scrambled out of the theater on beer runs as the ensemble repeatedly flubbed lines and took on the softest of targets. Given the perfunctory laughs, zero raising of the stakes, and lack of the troupe's usual expert character work, most of the scenes should have been left on the drawing board. These guys are much sharper performers and writers than this rubbery, embryonic revue would lead you to believe, and their attempts to work out the kinks on the fly make for a trying evening. Through 11/20: Fri-Sat 10:30 PM. Then Dec 3-4: Fri-Sat 10:30 PM. Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport, 773-325-1700. $10. The show Fri 10/29 is preempted by a 9 PM performance at a costume party benefit for ALS (running 8 PM-midnight) at the Chicago Athletic Association, 12 S. Michigan, 312-371-0832. $75 in advance; $80 at the door.
