Les Miserables | Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Les Miserables Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through June 8 2014

Inspired by Victor Hugo's novel, this musical unfolds in 1830s Paris, where an outlaw named Jean Valjean lives with his adopted daughter, Cosette. The pair is hunted by a merciless cop, but Cosette's Prince Charming, the student-turned-revolutionary Marius, is no paragon either—after a popular uprising backfires, he forgets his friends who died in solidarity with peasants and merrily invites monarchs to his nuptials. But where heroes fail, the crooked Thenardiers (Mark David Kaplan and Sharon Sachs) win us over—they're so comically cynical they seem lighthearted despite the murder of their children. The cast's powerful singing held me in my seat for this three-hour performance. I only wish the actors hadn't chosen to signal high-stakes moments by cracking their voices. —Jena Cutie
