Les ordres

Michel Brault's powerful documentary (1974) of the 1970 Quebec crisis, when civil liberties were suspended after the kidnapping of a British government offical by members of a secessionist group. Few nonfiction films manage to achieve this level of suspense and shock without resorting to rhetorical tricks, and Brault's smooth integration of “re-created” incidents and newsreel footage stands as a model of responsibility and expressiveness. In French with subtitles. 109 min.
