Liberty Heights

At one point in this rambling drama set in Baltimore in 1954, a Jewish teenager decides to dress as Hitler for Halloween, and his family's reaction and his defense of his costume are insightful and hilarious. But parallel subplots detailing his romantic friendship with a black classmate and his brother's fascination with a “shiksa goddess” compete with an overarching story line, presented mainly from their father's point of view, about how the family's upper-middle-class status rests precariously on quasi-legal enterprises. Told from too many perspectives, the narrative puts suspense above substance, and its social consciousness seems contrived. Written and directed by Barry Levinson (Diner); with Ben Foster, Adrien Brody, Joe Mantegna, Rebekah Johnson, Carolyn Murphy, and Orlando Jones.
