Lies My Father Told Me

Old Wave Czech director Jan Kadar, working in Canada, made a very effective (if ruthless) sentimental drama out of this familiar story of cross-generational and cross-cultural conflicts in a Jewish immigrant family. Kadar indulges in a good deal of Disney-esque emotional pandering, but the film gains a fine, intelligent edge from the performances of Len Birman, Marilyn Lightstone, and Ted Allan, who also wrote the screenplay (1975).
