To the editors:

I read the story about Area 2 ["House of Screams," January 26] with great interest. It made me feel disgusted, sad, curious, amazed, and helpless. Although the jury failed to find Burge and his colleagues had committed any wrongdoing, in my mind they are torturers. I am disgusted that in our society white people can, and evidently do, persecute black people in this way. It is inhuman.

Undoubtedly, some form of injustice will always exist. Perhaps true "justice" can be accomplished only by a power greater than that which humans possess.

In this instance, I take comfort in the fact that these police officers know the truth, and that they are "sentenced" to live with it.
