Filament Theatre revives its 2014 production of Nicola McCartney's script. Of the earlier staging Suzanne Scanlon wrote: "Filament Theatre's stated mission is to 'activate' its audience as 'citizens, artists, and good stewards'; the Portage Park-based company's latest, a drama by Scottish playwright Nicola McCartney, is a testament to this spirit of engagement. Set in 1940 (and based on true events), the play follows two teen girls, Beth (Mara Dale) and Bess (Molly Bunder), who are stranded at sea, one of few survivors of a German torpedo attack that sinks the ship meant to carry them to safe haven in Canada. Bunder and Dale are magnificent, playing multiple roles as the story moves back and forth between their present predicament at sea and their unremarkable lives prior to the events that led them to the ship. Despite its nonlinear structure, this is a suspense-filled and cathartic tale of survival. Lighting, sound, and design combine to transcendent effect, and the small space renders the tale even more urgent, putting us up close, witnesses to its testimony. 'We don't forget,' the two young women say in conclusion, speaking of the many children who perished aboard the ship--and now we won't, either."
