Light Years Away

The first English-language film of Swiss director Alain Tanner (Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000) is in large part a preachy, static, gaseously mystical muddle—much more a film of 1969 than of 1981, when it was made. Trevor Howard stars as an aging hippie in the year 2000; he meets a young, unemployed man, whose name is Jonas and who becomes his apprentice/disciple in his plans to build a human-powered flying machine. Tanner's good sense seems to have deserted him in every department but that of mise-en-scene; the images remain crisp and intelligently conceived even as the sound track fogs over in Carlos Castaneda-isms. With Mick Ford.
