Lights in the Dusk

Finland's deadpan master, Aki Kaurismaki (The Man Without a Past), strikes out with this familiar and mostly laugh-free saga (2006) of a lonely, much-abused security guard (Janne Hyytiainen) who's tricked by a blond goddess he meets in a cafe (Maria Jarvenhelmi) into facilitating a jewel heist at the shopping mall he patrols. The guard's relationship with a plain-looking woman who runs a mobile hot dog stand provides the one oasis of muted affection, though it's overwhelmed by the formulaic noir plot. Kaurismaki creates some beautiful frames, carefully composing his affectless characters against the rooms' colors, but there's something wrong with your story when people are upstaged by the decor. In Finnish with subtitles. 80 min.
