Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Gym Class Heroes, Keri Hilson Recommended All Ages Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: 2009

R & B singer Keri Hilson is part of a songwriting team called the Clutch, which has worked extensively with Timbaland, and her long-delayed debut album, In a Perfect World . . . (Mosley Music Group/Zone 4/Interscope), carries his imprimatur—it’s coreleased by his label and he contributes to four tracks. But Timbaland’s wizardry can’t disguise the fact that Hilson doesn’t have the depth and power of singers like Keyshia Cole (who easily upstages her with a cameo on “Get Your Money Up”) or Mary J. Blige—though she kills it with Lil Wayne’s help on “Turnin’ Me On,” elsewhere her thin voice is frequently overwhelmed by a pummeling machinelike beat. On something warmer and more sparse, like the languid, Prince-influenced groove of “Slow Dance,” she sounds far more convincing. Lil Wayne headlines; T-Pain, Gym Class Heroes, and Hilson open. —Peter Margasak
