Lily Festival

Sachi Hamano, a veteran of Japanese erotic films, bravely takes on the topic of senior sexuality with this 2001 farce set in a retirement complex. Half a dozen female residents of various temperaments get their hopes up when a 75-year-old man moves in, jostling to fawn over him. Although she has a keen ear for bawdy golden-girl talk, Hamano's visual style (and the swoony, tinkling piano score) are as quaint as the kimonos worn by the old dears—which makes the lesbian encounter at the end as unexpected as it is gratuitous. The actresses, however, look like they're having a great time spoofing subservient feminine types. In Japanese with subtitles. 100 min.
