L'imitation of Life Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 10 2013

This 2006 comedy by Ricky Graham, based on a script by Bruce McNally, parodies Douglas Sirk's 1959 film Imitation of Life, which starred Lana Turner as an actress who's too busy with her career to pay any attention to her daughter. Meanwhile, Turner's black maid gets her heart broken by her own daughter, who's light-skinned and desperate to pass for white. In Cheryl Snodgrass's raucous staging for Hell in a Handbag Productions, all the major roles are played by men in drag, which sort of mirrors the way Sirk subverts a melodramatic story with deceptively cheery Technicolor surfaces. But the chief pleasures are the script's top-drawer one-liners and the hilarious performances of the cast, especially Ed Jones's unhinged-sexpot take on Turner. —Zac Thompson
