Line One The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays, Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 14 2014

Conceived by John Kaufmann in 2004, this "cell-phone play" from Waltzing Mechanics has the tagline and concept "Live Callers. Live Actors. A new adventure each night." On the night I attended, the theme was "Man's Best Friend," the phone-wielding actors onstage prompting callers to tell their dog-related stories, then relaying them to the audience verbatim. There were some brilliant raw moments—like Ross Compton's portrayal of a man's last ride to the vet with his dog and subsequent aversion to white cars—even if muting those to cut to adventures at the pet store or other trivial anecdotes led to some emotional whiplash. Bad cell connections are another inevitable downside to the show, which could use some more creative ways to keep audience energy up while actors repeat themselves into their earpieces. —Marissa Oberlander

Price: $10-$25
