Geography shapes personality in this austere and slow-moving Argentine drama (2008), which follows a merchant seaman (Juan Fernández) who jumps ship in Tierra del Fuego. Intent on seeing the mother he left behind many years ago, the taciturn sailor hitchhikes to his remote mountain hometown, fortifying himself en route with large amounts of alcohol. His return is accepted matter-of-factly by the community—save for the disapproving villager who has assumed responsibility for his family. With only the barest story, at the end the movie falls back on the metaphor of fox trapping to illuminate the protagonist: he's the one who got away, but not without permanent damage. Lisandro Alonso (Los Muertos) directed. In Spanish with subtitles.
