Living on Velvet

This should have been a masterpiece, and I'm still not sure why it isn't. Frank Borzage here finds a perfect plot to carry the redemptive theme of his melodrama: a pilot (George Brent) has a close brush with death, and decides to live out his “borrowed time” as a playboy. Borzage marshals some of his finest effects to demonstrate the fallacy of living for the moment, but somehow the film fails to convince—perhaps because of the shoddy Warner Brothers production, or the inability of its stars to project on a spiritual plane. The supporting cast includes Kay Francis, Warren William, and Helen Lowell (1936).
