Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Thieves, gamblers, and drug dealers in London's East End become murderers and victims in this farce full of predigested ironies (1999, 105 min.), about the fate of a pair of antique rifles and everyone who tries to steal, sell, or fire them. Strung together with pop songs, like too many crime comedies indebted to Martin Scorsese, this movie blends extremes of violence and humor to create an irreverent tone that nullifies everything; the plot is so clever it crushes the characterization, making all the action seem perfunctory. Written and directed by Guy Ritchie; with Nick Moran, Jason Flemyng, Jason Statham, and Dexter Fletcher.
