Loners

A huge hit in its native Czech Republic, this offbeat ensemble comedy (2000) was inspired by Cameron Crowe's Singles, which says something about the Americanization of European movies. A travel agent callously manipulates a couple of his friends into breaking up, and the woman is wooed by an old lover, who hopes to get her back despite the fact that he's married with children. Most appealing are a mover (Jiri Machacek) so stoned he doesn't remember he's in a relationship, and a bartender (Labina Mitevska) who's come to Prague in search of UFOs; they inject some whimsy into a story with too many sour moments to earn its semihappy ending. David Ondricek directed. In Czech with subtitles. 104 min.
