Lonesome Drifter Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through July 13 2013

A wayfaring cowboy happens upon a washed-up silver-mining town in Colorado where folks aren't too certain who anybody is anymore. That's partly because, in a tiny backwater, everyone can pretend to be whom they wish—in this case, a veritable potpourri of Old West cliches—and partly because mercury has contaminated the groundwater. The townspeople involve the newcomer in preparations for their upcoming centennial bash, where, by the way, the mayor's fitfully psychotic wife plans to massacre everyone. The cast's willingness to undermine failed jokes with belly laughs keeps things fast-paced, and while their jangling, sometimes off-key singing suits this parody of prosperity and patriotism, the sweet crooning of the drifter himself is the show's best feature. He's so levelheaded a narrator, though, that he delivers the climactic fireworks as an aimless mess. —Jena Cutie
