To the editors:

Over the last 25 years, in order to make a repetitious drive more interesting, I began leaving the expressway to travel Route 12 through the shoreline cities of northwest Indiana. I have felt hopeful from signs of progress in Gary and saddened by terrible air pollution. Reading what Gary resident Cory Elliott did that September night ["What Makes a Hero?," April 5], nothing in that city can ever look quite the same.
