Lord of the Wrigley: Fellowship of the Cubs Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 29 2014

The Nerdologues' latest comedy, an odd mix of bro baseball allegiance and geeky Lord of the Rings fandom, is a creative idea that might be better served as a sketch than as a full-length show. It centers on a group of typical north-siders hanging at a bar aptly named the Sandlot when a Cubs winning streak forces them to undertake a quest to restore the balance of baseball in Chicago. The journey south to extinguish the darkness at "the Field of the Cellular" drags, but there are some fun appearances from Wrigley wraiths (normally imprisoned in the Harry Caray statue). A couple surprising monologues from Katie Johnston-Smith and Joe Gennaro draw introspective though slightly out-of-place parallels with baseball worth exploring further—including a lesson in how a story's villain depends on your perspective. —Marissa Oberlander
