Los Lobos Early Warnings (Music) Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

When: Mon., Dec. 31, 7:30 & 11 p.m. 2012

On the 1992 album Kiko Los Lobos discovered a new vitality, updating their mix of American and Mexican roots with allusive songwriting and experimental production techniques, and earlier this year they celebrated its 20th anniversary with a deluxe reissue and a live version. The album still sounds fresh, if not quite as radical as it did two decades ago, and this summer the band played it in its entirety at selected live shows. This concert is on New Year’s Eve, though, so it won’t be one of them—on such an occasion most folks aren’t interested in reconsidering the entirety of a classic LP. All the same I imagine the band will revisit some of their great songs—even though, after 40 years together, they remain more willing to challenge themselves than almost any other rock band I can think of. They’re also staunchly devoted to the fundamentals of American music, and one of the world’s most reliably excellent live acts. —Peter Margasak
