Lost in Beijing

Soft-core sex scenes caused government censorship problems for this 2007 film by maverick Li Yu, but it's more subversive for its acerbic treatment of the class divide between urban nouveau riche and provincial working poor. Beijing's mushrooming skyline provides the backdrop for this melodrama about a young masseuse (Fan Bingbing) who's raped by her wealthy employer (Tony Leung Ka Fai of The Lover). Her immature husband (Tong Da Wei) just happens to be washing the boss's windows at the moment she's assaulted, and after learning of her pregnancy, he turns to extortion. What follows strains credibility, but it's worth seeing for Taiwanese diva Elaine Jin (Yi Yi), deliciously vindictive as Leung's put-upon spouse. In Mandarin with subtitles. 112 min.
