Louie Bluie | Chicago Reader

Louie Bluie

This 1985 documentary by Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World) seems almost like a dramatic version of a Reader cover story: it's about Howard Armstrong, aka Louie Bluie, 76-year-old south-side leader of one of the nation's last surviving string bands. Needless to say, Armstrong makes a brilliant raconteur, spinning tales of his upbringing in the rural south, life on the road, and performing for Polish weddings. On the side, he's an artist and philosopher, having hand lettered and illustrated several volumes of memoirs and sexual meditations. In short, a typical Chicagoan, captured in a bright, affectionate, straightforward piece of work laced with irresistible music. 75 min.
