In a 2015 profile of Chicago production duo Louis the Child for local culture site These Days writer Ben Niespodziany noted that the teenaged group focused their attention online rather than at the streets of their hometown. Providing more detail, Freddy Kennett, then a senior at New Trier High School, told Niespodziany, “Chicago’s not even our top city [for SoundCloud plays. That’s] Los Angeles and New York and London and then Chicago.” It’s easy to pinpoint why Kennett and his production partner, Robby Hauldren have raked in plays by the millions online. Their ultramodern euphoria—built from dramatic and thundering percussion, divine synths, and echoing bass that together act like Dance Dance Revolution arrows on the dance floor—blend with any and all surroundings, as if Louis the Child had emerged from the same “indie-pop” cauldron whence we received Halsey. Their past few singles can feel indistinguishable within the blur of pinging percussion and big-footed melodies, though they wisely leave plenty of room for a vocalist to imprint personality on a track; Wilmette-raised rapper K. Flay provides alluring sighs on “It’s Strange” and Swedish pop wonders Icona Pop bring the anthemic might to “Weekend.”
