Love Always

Hitchhiker Julia (Marisa Ryan) isn't quite ready to settle down with her on-again-off-again lover of many years, so she leaves San Diego with his Spokane address as her destination, figuring she can fill her need for adventure once and for all along the way. At one point the script throws in the wedding of two close friends, giving Julia the opportunity to interrupt her cross-country quest and feel wistful and lonesome. Her interactions with the colorful characters who give her rides are occasionally interesting for their intensity or ability to evoke a region, but the fact that she has little contact with anyone besides bizarre or too-kind strangers keeps us on the surface of her character. Julia may be a realistic representation of someone afflicted with crippling wanderlust, and her story is exceptionally, though perhaps unintentionally, depressing. Based on Sharlene Baker's novel Finding Signs, and written by Baker and director Jude Pauline Eberhard (1996).
