Love and Money Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Feb. 25 2012

Smart, sophisticated, and occasionally harrowing, this 2006 drama by Dennis Kelly is also more than a little familiar. Like other plays Steep Theatre's put up recently, it looks at 21st-century British urban anomie through the prism of a hot social issue (compulsive shopping and the debt trap, in this case), telling its story episodically and with a stylish indirection. Kelly also borrows the flipped narrative structure of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, diction and rhythms out of David Mamet, and a Big Bang metaphor that's awfully popular these days. In short, Love and Money is derivative. It's got its moments of power, all right—especially in Robin Witt's sharp production. But it draws that power from recycled materials. —Tony Adler
