Love Don't Cost a Thing

A remake of the 1987 teen comedy Can't Buy Me Love, with the action transposed to a mostly black high school in LA. Nickelodeon star Nick Cannon takes over for Patrick Dempsey as the hero, a hopeless geek who bribes a superhot cheerleader (Christina Milian) to date him for two weeks and raise his social stock; she gives him a Sean John makeover, which immediately goes to his head. Kids still subject to the slings and arrows of high school will find this a lot funnier than I did, though I did get a bang out of Kal Penn, Kevin Christy, and Kenan Thompson as Cannon's car-crazy pals. Troy Breyer (Let's Talk About Sex) directed a script cowritten with Michael Swerdlick. PG-13, 105 min.
