Love Etc.

In this elegantly crafted 1996 drama infused with humor and a bit of allegory, a woman marries a man and inspires an obsession in his best friend. The gestures of the actors—inclining heads, barely shifting facial expressions—say at least as much as the dialogue, and their characters possess the rare ability to read between the lines. Yet for all the intelligence and artfulness of the filmmaking, the movie offers little more than the usual take on ambiguous friendships and the ephemerality of romantic love. Director Marion Vernoux wrote the screenplay with Dodine Herry based on a novel by Julian Barnes; with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Yvan Attal, and Charles Berling.
