Love in Another Language

98 minutes 2012

Slight in theme and conventionally constructed, this forgettable romantic drama (2009) from Turkish director Ilksen Basarir centers on a bubbly telemarketer (Saadet Aksoy) and her love for a deaf librarian (Mert Firat). Their different methods of communicating—she speaks vociferously, he rarely speaks at all—are harvested for corny humor (she claims to have found the perfect man—he doesn’t talk!) or exploited for cheap pathos. Superfluous subplots—one involving unfair work conditions at the heroine’s job, the other about some dude with agoraphobia—also distract from what could have been an intriguing story about the complex nature of getting through to people. In Turkish with subtitles.
