Love in the Middle Ages Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 21 2008

Like an aging boomer who's let himself go, Scott Urban and Bob Solone's new musical about the romantic travails of a bunch of fifty-somethings is flabby and unattractive. Urban's unfocused story takes forever to unfold and is packed with banal, whiny, uninteresting characters. Likewise the songs, penned by Urban and Solone, are utterly forgettable. Perhaps a stellar cast of powerful singer/actors might have given this show the illusion of depth and urgency. But director Jason A. Fleece's ensemble, most of whom can't sing, rarely mine the limited potential of this material. Not even Urban, who appears as the show's overweight protagonist, fires on all cylinders. --Jack Helbig
