Love/Juice | Chicago Reader

Director-writer Kaze Shindo's 2000 debut feature brings to mind Wong Kar-wai's Happy Together, not only in its story of two aimless young roommates who reluctantly fall in love but also in its aggressively moody visual style. Chinatsu (Chika Fujimura), who's lesbian, nurses a crush on Kyoko (Mika Okuna), who sometimes shares her bed but doesn't put out. When they're not disco hopping or working as bunnies in a gentlemen's club, they kiss, engage in pouty girl talk, and agonize over the well-being of their goldfish. Shindo—granddaughter of venerable Japanese director Kaneto Shindo—has a flair for depicting the anguished rapport between the women, but goes overboard with the symbolism and the wailing Bjork-ish music. 78 min. In Japanese with subtitles.
