Love Story

A mope (Ali MacGraw) and a dope (Ryan O'Neal) in love. It's not the sentiment that curdles, but the lack of conviction that director Arthur Hiller brings to the schematic material. The film has a sense of fate, if only because every plot maneuver is visible from a mile away and executed as witlessly as possible. The predictable stands in for the inevitable, and romantic tragedy becomes ritual sacrifice. Ray Milland, as O'Neal's crustaceous dad, has his moments, but the rest of this 1970 feature is empty and uprooted.
