Love Sucks Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 26 2011

Roommates Calvin and Josie both have boyfriend trouble. Calvin sleeps with strangers; Josie is shallow, dishonest, and selfish. Their attempts to find love in spite of these challenges leads, in Josie's case, to a fling with a douchey NYU senior and, in Calvin's, to an affair with a closeted stockbroker getting ready to marry a ballbuster. Love indeed sucks. Playwright Rob Mersola steers clear of cloying rom-com cuddliness only to opt instead for a stridently zany tone and a plot (featuring a horny fortune-teller named Giuseppe) that would've been considered too dumb for Three's Company. The cast of John Nasca's chaotic staging for Pride Films and Plays turn in caffeinated performances full of mugging, goofy accents, and perpetual frenzy. —Zac Thompson
